June B. Backer, CSC hails from Boca Raton, Florida and has been a certified interpreter since 1987, graduating from the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (NTID) at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) in 1986. As a community interpreter, June worked in a variety of settings before establishing Nationwide Interpreter Resource, Inc. (NIR) in 1997.
June grew up in Monsey, New York and began her career working at Camp Jawanio, a pre-school for the deaf, before taking sign language classes at the NY Society for the Deaf and Westchester Community College (WCC) in 1983. While attending WCC, June worked part-time at Fanwood School for the Deaf as a dorm supervisor. During the summer of 1984, June attended Gallaudet University, before heading to NTID that Fall. After her first year at NTID, June was selected to be the interpreter for the Junior NAD, Deaf Youth Leadership Camp in Minnesota.
After graduating from NTID in 1986, June worked as a staff interpreter at RIT until she moved to Florida later that year. Upon her arrival in Florida, June passed the Florida QA with a level 3 and became nationally certified with a CSC in 1987 after attending Advanced Interpreter Training in St. Augustine, Florida. In July 1988, while the staff interpreter at the Deaf Service Center of Palm Beach County, June establish a FRID affiliate, PBFRID. During the 1990’s, June had 2 children Sophie and Ruben, now ages 18 and 16, while organizing weekend workshops for continuing education for interpreters throughout the U.S. June served as Conference Chair for the Region II Conference in Fort Lauderdale. Since the inception of NIR, June has planned over 18 workshops where she brought in seasoned presenters for interpreters to continue their enrichment.
Over the past 11 years as President, NIR has grown to become one of the premier sign language interpreting agencies in Florida with over 80 interpreters from Vero Beach to Miami. With a strong office staff, June continues to grow NIR and is happy to serve FRID this year as its Interpreter Coordinator.
